Get Glowing with Summer’s Bronzed & Dewy Makeup Trends

The last thing I want to be doing when the precious, precious summer comes around is to put on makeup. The majority of the time, I only use SPF. Why cover my face when a cool breeze will soon hit? Or if it’s going to be sweated off anyway? These are the questions… until the promise of colour comes to mind.

The warm months bring out the best in color cosmetics. Continue reading to find out what celebrities makeup artists have called the top summer 2024 makeup trends. Product recommendations are included.

Hypershine

Glossy lids have been for some time, but they can no longer be ignored.

Kasey Spickard, celebrity makeup artist, says, “We’ve been seeing this trend on the runways and in editorials for years, but it hasn’t quite made it to the mainstream. It doesn’t really last, it creases and it is a mess in real life.” “However I think there are some fun tricks and new formulas which actually make this look wearable.” We know that a glossy, dewy look is ideal for summer.

Spickard suggests Maybelline SuperStay Vinyl Ink (13 dollars) to get the look: “a high-shine liquid lipstick formula people have been using on TikTok for glossy, non-creasing lids.”

Robin Evans, a celebrity makeup artist who specializes in eyebrows, also likes Jillian Dempsey’s Lid Tint ($28), which she describes as “sheer and naturally applied and looks just like eyelid gloss.” The satin cream is infused with coconut, and has a beachy scent.

According to Jonet Williamson, a professional makeup artist, the glossy trend will continue on the lips. She says, “I think that lip oils and treatments will continue pushing traditional glosses back to the side burner or be used together more for hypershine.”

Grungy Eyes

The late ’70s, and the early ’80s have been re-emerging in style this summer. Renee Loiz, the celebrity makeup artist, describes grunge and graphic eyeshadows as “edgy and smoky.”

Spickard says we have another muse: “With MaXXXine releasing this summer, I believe that we’re going to see a lot more recreations of Maxine [Mia’s] makeup looks.” Even from the trailer, you can see a lot of makeup trends: draped blush, thin eyebrows, blue eyeshadow, and grungy, smokey eyes.

Need product recommendations? Spickard is a fan of the Makeup by Mario Neutrals Palette (50 dollars), Huda Beauty’s Pretty Grunge Palette (69 dollars), and Kulfi Kajal eyeliner (20 bucks) in “rain check.”

Berry Stained Lips

The summer is not complete without a bounty of fresh fruits, especially berries. We’ve seen strawberries and tomatoes, but they were in the red family. I’m seeing a shift towards berry-toned lips and cheeks, with purple undertones,” says Spickard. He gave Heather McMahan an intense berry lip at the Oscars using Maybelline SuperStay Ink Crayon in the shade “Accept a Dare” ($11). “I didn’t have those colors in my kit, but I’ve been getting more requests for it.” He shares.

Loiz has some other product suggestions for you if your lips haven’t been stained by eating two pints of blackberries at breakfast.

Staining lips will remain popular well into summer. The artist says that it’s an easy application and can be worn in any makeup look. She recommends Benefit’s Benetint (24 dollars), Milk Makeup’s viral Cooling Water Jelly Tint (24 dollars), and Fenty Beauty’s Poutsicle Hybrid Lip Stain (28) to your makeup collection. “Soft or diffused lips start with stain applied in the middle of the lips, then blended out.”

Sunset Colors

Williamson predicts that you will also see more vibrant shades on your cheeks and eyes as those crazy sunsets return.

She shares that “as blush continues to be popular from spring into summer, so too will colorful eye looks. There are subtle ways to include color such as bright eyeliner instead of black.” I’m currently loving a bright pink liquid eyeliner. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Eye Liner ($24) is my go-to.

Feathered eyebrows

“I’m a natural eyebrow stylist and I’m ready for the new era! Evans explains that we’re not overfilling with color cosmetics for the summer but instead focusing on healthy, fluffy, feathered brows.

Williamson says the days of bold eyebrows are over, and that “more feathered brows with skin visible” will be in fashion.

Loiz suggests using brow pens, such as KS&CO’s brilliant Microfeathering Brow Pen ($42), instead of pomades. She recommends choosing a product that is one shade lighter than the color of your brows for a perfect match.

Cloud Skin

What’s your skin feeling like this summer? Is it a little cloudy this summer? Loiz predicts satin matte finishes or cloudy finishes will rule. These looks don’t have to be glassy or dry, but rather a radiant-matte finish.

Williamson says that “satin skin finishes with a more matte finish will be the focal point, and highlighter will be placed more precisely than glassy dewy complexion which was fun for a while but I feel like we’ve moved forward,” adds Williamson. Kosas’ Cloud Set Baked Smoothing and Setting Powder ($35) will give you the look.

In The Clear

When it’s warm, I like to wear minimal makeup. Or, at least, makeup that appears like minimal makeup. You can call it no makeup.

“Another look for the eyes will be clear or no mascara. Liz recommends clean eyes that focus on the skin and bold lips.

Evans’ collection Levans Beauty of clear brows gels, with different textures and holds, was created with minimal makeup as a goal. The artist says that clear brow gels, which are her most popular product each day, are the future for minimal makeup and brows. She recommends a waterproof Cult Brow mega hold ($28) to go out in the sun.

Bronzed Glow

Summer is a great time to try out healthy, bronzed skin if you have a pale, sallow complexion. You can now get the same effect without ever exposing yourself to the sun’s rays.

Evans says, “I like this look all year round, but I love it, especially in the summer. Clean, radiant skin, perfect natural eyebrows, and lashes.” The only thing that could be better is freckles and sun-kissed, natural skin. The brow expert suggests using Freck Beauty’s The Original Freckle or Lime Crime’s Freckle Pen to create a fake freckle effect.
