The 2019 Spring/Summer runways showcased numerous boiler suits, instantly recognizable by their multiple pockets and buttons (or zippers) that run from the navel up to the neck, often featuring a top part that resembles a shirt or a small jacket.
While the boiler suit might seem like a contemporary design, its origins trace back to a type of workwear known as the “boiler suit.” Originally designed for practical use, these suits were equipped with multiple pockets to hold tools and provided full coverage from neck to feet to protect workers from hazards like smoke, sparks, and oil. Over time, astronauts and pilots adopted similar styles due to their functionality and protection.
Despite its utilitarian roots, the boiler suit remains a staple of practical fashion, dating back to the Industrial Revolution. It carries an industrial worker’s legacy but also subtly hints at a French chicness. This design aligns with the current trend towards utilitarian fashion and pairs well with monochromatic outfits for an elevated look.
