5 Steps to a Flawless Nude Makeup Look

Nude makeup is a unique look. A nude look can be minimalistic or luxurious depending on how it is executed. Both approaches are achieved by using neutral colors. Nudes can be a variety of looks. From no makeup to latte, they cover a broad range.

Fara Homidi, makeup artist, says that a standout nude look is a combination between textures and monochromatic tones. Texture is the key. Is the skin matte with a slight shine on the eyelids, or does it have a healthy, dewy look? “Small changes in texture can elevate a nude appearance to a new level.”

The definition of (and the accessibility of) nude makeup have evolved over the last few decades, thanks to new technologies and a wider range of skin-tones. Benjamin Puckey, makeup artist, says that nude makeup used to be associated with a minimalistic style, which focused on a natural appearance without a lot of contouring or highlighting. In recent years the definition of naked makeup has evolved to encompass a wider range of techniques and shades. The emphasis is now on customizing the makeup to match individual skin tones, features and preferences, as well a achieving a glowing, lit from within glow.

Skin-matching makeup has become a common trend on social media, whether you prefer the bold and heavy style or the more natural look.

Puckey says that enhancing your natural beauty is best done with naked makeup, but there are no strict rules. Feel free to experiment and try different techniques and shades to find what suits you best. Katie Jane Hughes, a makeup artist, reiterates that the goal is to enjoy the process, and celebrate your unique features. She also says that being nude does not mean you have to go monochromatic. She says it is important to find the nude makeup that works for you. If you like color, you can try a nude brown or red eye or a subtler cheek with brown mascara. There are no rules.

Here are 5 easy steps (and they can be easily customized) to get the ultimate nude look.

Step 1: Create an Effortless Base

Although nude makeup moments may not always be minimal, starting with well-tended, healthy skin will allow your products to perform and also allows for your natural skin tone to shine through. Homidi says that skin preparation is essential for any nude makeup look. Puckey: “I use Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream. It’s great under makeup, gives a gorgeous glow, without feeling oily or having too much slip.” It’s all about creating a flawless skin with subtle enhancements to allow your best features shine through without overwhelming them.

Step 2: Select Your Coverage

Your texture is what defines the look of your complexion when it comes to coverage. Homidi says, “Here are my thoughts on the different skin finishes: matte, natural mattes, dewy skin, glass skin etc. The finish you choose will depend on the aesthetic that you want. For a sun-kissed look, a shimmery finish is best, while a sheer finish looks minimalist. Matte finishes are perfect for glam. Homidi suggests that you start in the middle of your face, and work outwards with the product. Only perfect the areas where it is needed. After you’ve chosen the liquid foundation you like best, or that suits your nude look for the day, the rest will be easier to understand.

Step Three: Highlighting and Contour

Dimension is the key to naked makeup. After your base has been moisturized, protected and perfected it is time to add angles. Homidi says to add a touch of structure with contouring or bronzer. Puckey says that the key is to use subtle contrasts to bring out your features and let your natural beauty shine. “I love Westman Atelier Face Trace Contour Stick because it has shades to contour the skin as well as to warm it up,” he says. After you have drawn your contour and blended it, use your favorite highlighter to intensify desired shadows and draw light to areas such as the cheekbones and bridge of your nose.

Step Four: Define your eyes

Eye makeup is essential for highlighting a nude makeup. It should have depth and subtle intensity. Puckey says to “define the eyes” by using neutral eyeshadows like taupe, soft brown, and beige. She also suggests brushing a darker shade in the crease while accentuating the inner corners of the eyes with shimmery champagne. It all depends on the skin tone. Taupes and tawny browns, cocoa and chocolate brows and alabaster neutrals are some of the pretty shades. Puckey suggests keeping the framing simple, but adding drama. Focus on applying eyeliner close to the lashes, along the upper waterline, and to the inner corners of the eyes to give the appearance of longer lashes. Finish off with several coats of mascara.

Step Five: Paint Your Pout

A nude lip will always be a desirable choice, whether you prefer a naked face or not. Choose a matte, high-gloss or shimmer finish in a nude shade that has undertones that complement your skin tone. Homidi recommends lining your lips in a complementary pencil to enhance your pout. However, wearing lipstick alone is equally effective. Hughes says that classic shades are fine (as long as they go with your palette), and a barely there balm is also acceptable.
