Who Says Tweed Is Just for Grandma? The Fashion World Disagrees!

Think again if tweed brings to mind images of Park Avenue, Coco Chanel, and tiny designer dogs. Also, pearl-clutching women who are out for lunch. The days of pastels and purses paired with conservative sets are over. Tweed, the favorite of all uptown golden girls, is back in style.

Do you not believe me? Check out the It girls. Lily-Rose Depp wowed audiences at the Cannes Film Festival with her new take on the tweed dress. Jennie from Blackpink is wearing so many tweed skirts, that you’ll be adding them to your wishlist (and mine too). Sofia Richie Grainge is the “queen of quiet luxury” (although she prefers to call herself “timeless”) and her white bridal set has gone viral along with the rest of the meticulously curated nuptials.

Designers are pushing the limits of tweed in the 21st Century. Kim Shui debuted a pink-and-green tweed coat on the runway. Han Chong’s Self-Portrait recently featured Emily Ratajkowski in a cheekily-tweed-heavy campaign. Maje, a French cool-girl label, debuted an entire capsule dedicated to tweed’s versatility. It featured Lila Moss in tweed that was styled with a Gen Z-coded look.

A new generation is making tweed its own. It’s time to dust off that staid, sometimes stuffy material and put away the sequins. You’ll see a few outfits that will convince you. This isn’t your grandmother’s tweed.

The Statement Coat that Ends All Statement Coats

Kim Shui / Miu Miu / Cult Gala / Reformation

This coat has it all. Fur collar? I’ll give you a matching pair of cuffs. Y2K vibes? Paris Hilton loves pink-and-green combinations. Tweed? She has more than one style. This piece has been in my head ever since it was first seen on the runways last year.
