Sex and the City: Great Friends & Great Fashion Live Forever

How many life theories and pieces of advice have we learn from this cult TV show? We have to admit: lots of them. But hey, who’s to blame when it was the most popular girl’s TV show for ages (not really sure if there will ever be a similar show, with such an impact). Nevertheless, let’s forget the life-changing love and guy hints, and let’s focus on their style. Whether they were sipping Cosmo’s, or maybe shopping and strolling the beautiful New York streets, Charlotte, Carrie, Miranda and Samantha were all dressed top-notch. Each one had her own touch to the style, adding a bit of a hint of her character actually.

Sex and the City is an American television series that was of the genre romantic comedy and a run from 1998 to 2004 on HBO. Exploring the sexual endeavors of four friends, Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes, the series explores social issues like femininity, safe sex, sexuality and promiscuity. Winning seven Emmy Awards and eight Golden Globe Awards, the show earned critical acclaim for the four main characters for their unique characters and fashion sense. So here, let us take a look at some of their best looks.

Carrie Bradshaw

Carrie Bradshaw

She is a weekly column writer for the fictitious newspaper, The New York Star. Her column named “Sex and the City” is about her sexual encounters as well as that of her friends who live in the city of New York.

The Famous Tutu – Carrie is the one who brought tutus back on the map, sporting it at Times Square. Her unexpected style statements were given the tone by the famous tutu.

The Carrie Necklace – Weinberg got the inspiration to introduce the Carrie necklace while travelling on a train and watching some Italian girls wearing the iconic nameplate necklace. The small incident sparked the idea which ended up being quite successful.

The Newspaper Dress – As a columnist this is one great dress that suits her profession. A dress made of newspaper clippings, she gracefully wore it and won millions of hearts.

Signature Flower – Sarah Jessica Parker’s love for flowers helped to inspire this look. The dress was accessorized with a flower on the shoulder which got larger and larger as the series progressed.

Fur Coat – Popularized in the first season of the series, Carrie’s fur coat gained a lot of popularity and became one of the most sought after coats among the audience. Made of racoon, it was borrowed and later sold to Weinberg for a price of $200.

Samantha Jones

Samantha is Carrie’s friend who’s storyline revolves around her frequent sexual encounters and the short term relationships she has. She is none to be pretty straightforward and very protective of her friends.

Seafoam Green – A dress usually only worn by bridesmaids, Samantha made it a normal attire through the series wearing it on multiple occasions. Unlike a lot of others, Samantha is able to pull it off very well, and she knows she does.

Punk-Print Jumpsuit and Pink Metallic Fanny Pack – One of the looks probably none of the others can pull off. This is practically Samantha’s way of saying, “Look! I can wear whatever I want and I don’t care.”

Gold Leather Coat and Boots – She is the one who never goes out without wearing matching outfits and what better color to suit a gold leather coat than gold leather boots.

Electric Blue Top – It is one of the most attention-seeking outfits she has ever worn. As a matter of fact, she got all the attention that no one noticed Carrie’s mismatched shoes. Poor thing.

Color Mix & Match – She is an expert at mixing and matching colors that really would not go if tried by someone else. That is the magic. She can make anything work, always being one step ahead of the group of four.

Charlotte York

The traditional and conservative of the four, Charlotte is the hopeless romantic of the group who is on the look out for her soulmate. A believer of emotional love over lust, she is extremely straightforward when it comes to relationships and confines herself to the dating and relationship rules.

Charlotte’s Elizabeth Taylor Dress – How can we ever forget that. One of the favorites among her fans, what inspires the dress most is the moving story behind it which makes the dress all the more special to all of us.

The Ralph Lauren Sweater – We gave our heart to Charlotte when she wore the Ralph Lauren Sweater. She eased into the preppy casual look without any trouble and stole our hearts. It is probably the dress which made us crush on her a lot more.

Emerald Green outfit – She made us go gaga over her by sporting the Emerald Green outfit to perfection. The intricate Oscar de la Renta detail just added on to the beauty, and we craved for more since then.

– She is the sign of elegance among the four. Her ability to get the classy look out of different outfits are unmatched for. It is all about subtle details, they say, and that holds 100% right in Charlotte’s case.

Pink Coat – If anyone is going to award from the four, that would be Charlotte for the Pink coat. Accessorizing with the pink handbag might make us say, “What were you thinking?” But somehow, she manages to stay so adorable.

Miranda Hobbes

Miranda Hobbes

A lawyer who puts her career before relationships, she lives with her son Brady in Brooklyn. She is a workaholic who is embarked on a constant struggle to balance her work, social life and motherhood. She is shown to have distrust against men, but as the series progresses, she is seen to change.

The Black Suit – Among the stylishly dressed three, Miranda carried on with her work outfit. Being a lawyer, probably there was no choice for her but to wear the suit. What can we say, She pulled it off perfectly.

Brown Suits – We know Miranda loves suits maybe as a part of her profession. But have you seen anyone else show off their elegance in brown suits? At least none of the rest could.

Short Sleeved Sweatshirt – Is it a T-shirt or a sweatshirt? Does it matter? Not really, because she looks at her athletic best in it. Miranda is someone who has always toned down her style and stuck to simple but sporty outfits.

Daring Cut Dress – Miranda was ready to rock the party with her Daring cut dresses which she rarely wears. But when she is out with the girls partying, that is what she does.

Casual Yellow Outfit – It is kind of hard to see Miranda in a casual outfit. But when she does wear one, she does a brilliant job. Like when she wore the Yellow off shoulder dress. We just wanted more, a lot more.

Ah, the perfect style resembling picture. Samantha is shown in a sexy, body con dress, proving her provocative image even in her fifties, and she does that perfectly. Miranda is classically effortless, with a lean shape silk dress, perfect for any occasion you have. Carrie is the modern trendsetter (like always) wearing a beautiful white mini dress with signature hair waves, while Charlotte is channeling 50s ladylike style, with the pink color (remember Jackie Kennedy’s pink Chanel suit?) and the peplum.

Charlotte is the innocent one in the sleek white dress, as usual. Carrie doesn’t seek to disappoint her fashion abilities wearing a men inspired white vest with a striped shirt and tie, while Miranda and Samantha prove how successful business ladies dress every day, with a chic touch of course.

This is the epitome of channeling bohemian chic, with a variety of maxi printed dresses. Bravo! You can go to Coachella now, or even strut the streets of New York!

Brrrr, it is snowing, but that doesn’t mean that our heroines are chic to the max. Although they skipped the bright colors this time, they showcased how neutral-toned grey outfits can prove not to look dull on a winter day. Just make sure you bare the legs (with thin tights we hope!).

Conclusion

It would be an understatement to say they have influenced a number of people from the generation on the basis of their fashion sense. They have dictated the fashion styles of the late 90s and early 2000s without a doubt.
