In this article, we did a bit of research plus asked some interior designers on what things should we always be careful about when it comes to decorating. Mistake #1: Too many throw pillows.
Alright, we get it. Pillows are super comfy, cozy and cute so what’s not to love about them, right?! But when you start piling your bed up with too much throw pillows, it will all go from super fluffy to super cramped. Not that it’s quite a pain to see but it also makes an uncomfortable space to relax in.
Solution: Go easy with those pillows.
Consider the size of your bed when it comes to choosing your pillows. Add some throw pillows for design and comfort but always remember to not pile it all up. If you are really a pillow person, you can have some stored in your cabinet and just take them out when you’re about to use it.
Mistake #2: Bulky and Lopsided Sofas
Unless you have a very huge space to spare, it’s not always wise to go for extremely bulky furniture; what more sofa. It takes so much space which ends up making your room a lot smaller. In addition to this, bulky sofas that feature thick fabric are harder to clean and are more prone to dust and mites.
Solution: Go for minimalist sofa pieces.
Minimalist furniture like sofa chairs are more comfortable and much easier to maintain. It doesn’t take so much space and it makes your living room more inviting. Buy or DIY your own specific storage box for your cables and make sure to label them up to avoid confusion. Make it a habit to put it back in the box when not in use to save yourself some time and also, from possible electric-related danger.
Mistake #4: Mismatched Curtains
When it comes to interior designing, the word “mismatched” does not always mean that everything needs to be of the same set, color or pattern. When we say mismatched curtains, it is when you choose unflattering curtains that don’t fall perfectly on the same theme. Chances are, the room will look quite distracting and it will minimize the natural light that comes in the room.
Solution: Go for flattering curtains and don’t load your windows up with them.
A ray of natural daylight is always a good thing to make your room more spacious and inviting. This is how curtains should play their role and not to fully hinder light from coming in. Choose complementing hues that match your home’s motif.
Mistake #5: Overdecorating
If you love decorating, then you probably spend hours inside the home furniture section of the department store. It can be quite tempting to buy something cute to add in your room but too much decorations will definitely ruin your home. It will take so much space, make the room darker and very uninviting.
Solution: Hang them on the walls or go for wall storage furniture.
But of course, if you really love adding decorations, then nothing should stop you! You only need to be organized about it and maximize the use of your walls rather than piling everything up on your counters and table tops.
Mistake #6: Distracting Patterns
It’s pretty distracting to see too many unflattering patterns in one room. If you know the feeling of looking onto horizontal, vertical and diagonal pinstripes at the same time, then it’s the same feeling you get if you load your room up with mismatched printed patterns.
Solution: Go for a single theme.
balance it out by choosing one pattern and matching it with something plain. If you are dealing with heavy printed patterns, then it is much better to choose light or pastel colors to work with.
Mistake #7: Too many photos on one counter table.
We all know how lovely it is when we put sentimental photos in frames for us to reminisce from time to time. But it’s a whole different story if you have ten generations of family photos all piled up on a single table. It’s like Mistake #5 wherein you take so much space because you overdecorate.
Solution: Hang them on the walls
It’s like putting artwork and paintings on your wall! Not only that, your visitors get to see your life’s favorite moments too. It saves space and does not make a single furniture look so cramped and crowded.
Mistake #8: Cluttered Table Tops.
Candles, magazines, flower vases – the list goes on and on! We tend to put everything on the living room table top thinking that it makes a great decoration. But in reality, it all looks like clutter.
Solution: Decorate table tops with matching furniture instead.
If you really want to decorate your living room table tops, go for pieces that really match. You can choose to overdo it since living room end tables are usually for additional decor anyway. Just try to make everything look in complete harmony by picking up pieces that go with your theme.
Mistake #9: Fluffy Carpet-like Toilet Rugs.
We tend to pick them up because they are the easiest to find in the market. The thing is, toilet rugs made from carpet-like fabric material are harder to clean. Not to mention that it makes a great bacteria and odor magnet!

One best option is to go for microfiber fabric rugs. They effectively absorb water and they are very easy to clean as well.
