Velvet is a type of fabric that is used in the production of luxury items and clothing. During the ancient years, this type of fabric is associated with nobility. Because of its unusual appearance and unparalleled softness, its production is quite costly and only the richest people can afford it. But thanks to the developments in the textile industry, the process of manufacturing velvet has become more affordable.
Velvet can be manufactured using different kind of fibers including acetate, cotton, and rayon. The most expensive kind of velvet is the fine gist velvet because of its sheen and lovely drape capabilities. On the other hand, velvet made from acetate and rayon is collectively known as artificial velvet. It has the same shimmer of the fine gist velvet. However, artificial velvet is a lot heavier so they do not drape well. Velvet made from silk and rayon velvet are employed for the creation of evening wears and dresses. Cotton velvet is usually used for the manufacture of skirts, vests, blazers and other types of outerwear garments. In addition to that, cotton velvet is also used for upholstery, cushion, bed covering and drapery.
