Balloon sleeve, or also known as the bishop sleeve, is a type of sleeve style that is rounded from the shoulder to the elbow and tightly fitted from the elbow up to the wrist. It is an updated and more stylish version of the long sleeve cut. The size of the sleeve resembles that of the church bishop’s uniform, and that is why it has gotten the name bishop sleeve.
This type of sleeve has become popular during the 60’s, but it has made a comeback just recently. It has become an important element in achieving the hippie and elegant look during the earlier years and is commonly used in the design of peasant blouses and dresses. During the 70’s and 80’s, this type of sleeve was done on lycra and polyester long dresses to achieve a regal look. Other types of fabric that are perfect for this cut include soft fabrics like light jersey or silk.
